Federal Recruiting Campaign Teams Up with LSU Career Expo

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is taking its campaign to attract new talent to the Federal workforce on the road to the campus of Louisiana State University (LSU). Vitally important and rewarding Federal careers will be showcased September 13 as part of a Career Expo on the LSU campus.

OPM Director Linda M. Springer announced the partnership with the LSU Office of Career Services in conducting the expo, “as part of our aggressive recruitment effort to let young people know, whatever their career interests, they can find challenging opportunities in the Federal workforce.”

The expo, one of several in which OPM will participate on college campuses around the country this fall, is one of the agency’s initiatives to heighten awareness about Federal career opportunities. Springer noted OPM launched an innovative television recruitment campaign last year entitled ‘What did you do at your job today?‘, which has alerted more Americans about the variety of skills needed to carry out the essential work of the Federal government. Springer said that since OPM launched the campaign, the Federal government’s central jobs Website, www.usajobs.gov, has seen a spike of tens of thousands of additional visits from potential job seekers.

These recruitment initiatives are helping OPM carry out its mission of ensuring the Federal government has an effective civilian workforce for years to come. OPM estimates 60 percent of the Federal government’s 1.8 million member workforce will be eligible to retire in the next 10 years.

Springer said the agency is returning to college campuses with the goal of building long-term relationships and recruiting pipelines with institutions of higher education. She said the schools have demonstrated a commitment to supporting Federal employment opportunities for their students and alumni and offer strong curricula in many of the Federal Government’s mission critical occupations.

More than 35 individual Federal agencies are sending representatives to the LSU Career Expo. The expo will feature a USAJOBS booth to demonstrate the Website, on which is listed an average 20, 000 job openings a day. OPM will also conduct two workshops for attendees on “How to Find and Apply for Federal Jobs and Student Programs.” The expo will be held at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
