The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, or OFHEO, has an important mission — to promote housing and a strong national housing finance system by ensuring the safety and soundness of mortgage finance companies Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) and Freddie Mac (Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation).  OFHEO is the safety and soundness regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) shares responsibility for mission, new products and affordable housing goals.  Fannie Mae is located in Washington, DC and Freddie Mac is located in McLean, Va. These two government-sponsored enterprises own or guarantee nearly $4.9 trillion of residential mortgages in the U.S. and play a key role in housing and the U.S. economy.

OFHEO is located at 17th and G St, NW, just a block from the White House.  The Agency was created in 1992  in the Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Soundness Act of 1992 (12 U.S.C. 4501 et seq.).The Office is headed by a Director appointed by the President for a five-year term. OFHEO Director James B. Lockhart III  was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 15, 2006.
