What is a Federal SES Resume?
Senior Executive Service (SES) positions are jobs at the the highest levels in the civil service – the people who run entire departments or an entire agency. In order to apply for most SES positions, you must have at least 10 years experience. For SES positions, you’ll need to submit a federal SES resume and additional statements, plus Executive Core Qualification (ECQ) statements which outline your leadership competencies.
To apply for an SES position, you’ll first need a federal SES resume, which includes considerably more information than a resume for a private sector job. You’ll need to include the following:
Announcement number, and title and grade to which you’re applying.
Personal Information, including: full name, mailing address, home, cell and work phone numbers, e-mail address, Social Security number, country of citizenship (most federal jobs require United States citizenship), veterans' preference, highest federal civilian grade held (give job series and dates held) and a professional summary written in the third person.
Work Experience, including each job title (include series and grade if a federal job, or level in military if a veteran), employer's name and full address, including street address, city, state and zip code, supervisor's name and phone number, starting and ending dates (month and year) [note: some formats require month, date and year, hours per week, salary, job duties and accomplishments.
Education, including colleges and universities’ name, city, state and zip code, major plus type and year of any degrees received, GPA, total credits and types of credits earned, course list, and high school, including date of diploma or GED, high school name, city, state and zip code.
Other Qualifications, including job-related training courses – course title, date, course duration, certifications and licenses (include Secret or Top Secret clearance here), job-related skills (other languages, computer software/hardware, tools, machinery, typing speed ), job-related honors, awards, and special accomplishments (memberships in professional or honor societies, leadership activities, public speaking, and performance awards).
The exact format of your federal SES resume may differ, depending on the application requirements for the job to which you’re applying. However, much, if not all, the information above is required for developing a federal resume. Sometimes, a cover letter is a good way to encapsulate your background and experience for the employer. Remember, however, that Federal Resumes – including the Federal SES Resume – must conform to specific requirements. You must include all of the information required, or the application will be rejected.
Navigating the Army Resume Application: What You Should Know
When you first go to the Army Resume Application site where résumé builder allows you to create or submit a resume there is a training module. This can be accessed in an MS Word version to read, or an online video can be watched providing detailed instructions. The site is located at https://cpolst.belvoir.army.mil/public/resumebuilder/builder/index.jsp and is a valuable tool the Federal job hunter can use.
This system is created to assist users in entering their résumés into the centralized Army Resumix system. Supplemental data can also be entered here. The system is designed to be intuitive with easy to follow instructions and by entering a resume once an applicant is able to take full advantage of the system and apply for many positions as they be come available.
The system also includes a tool called ANSWER which stands for Applicant Notification System Web Enabled Response. This allows a complete tracking of resume status. Users are able to toggle back and forth between the Resume Builder and the ANSWER system.
The main thing that an applicant should keep in mind is simply that all instructions should be read and should be followed closely. Doing so will allow submission of a resume and KSA statements when jobs are located, will automate the entire process and become a great time saver for the applicant.
Applying Online: You Need an Effective Plain Text Resume
When applying online a plain text version of the resume is essential. When a resume is prepared in a standard word processing program such as Microsoft Word, Word Perfect or the word processing part of Open Office or Microsoft Works, the formatting is much cleaner and the resume itself looks better. However, while MS Word is used by many, there are other programs out there as well, with no particular standard used by everyone.
For that reason, most online sites and in particular USAJobs require that a resume be posting in a plain text, or .txt format. Federal jobs are applied for also by submitting KSA statements, knowledge skills and aptitudes. This as well should be submitted in plain text format.
Translating your Federal resume into a plain text format isn’t difficult. You simply go to the “file” section of Microsoft Word or the equivalent in other programs, click “save as” and then choose “plain text”. Afterwards, but sure to go into the file and check the formatting. There may be odd characters saved that need to be deleted. Many people find that using WordPad or Notepad for editing is helpful.
Of course, a professional Federal resume writer will usually provide a plain text version of the resume and KSA statement to the client along with the Word version.
When You Should Stick to a 1-Page Resume
How long should your resume be? At one time, the rule was “one-page-fits-all,” but that is no longer necessarily the case. If you have an advanced degree or extensive experience beyond 10 years, it’s acceptable to increase your resume to two pages. The general rule is that it should be long enough to entice employers to call you for an interview.
Clear as mud, right? Well, here are some more specific guidelines that might help. Your resume should be kept to one page under the following circumstances:
- You are a recent college or high school graduate, and/or have less than 10 years of total work experience
- You are changing careers and have little or no work experience that is relevant to your new job objective
- The bulk of your experience, however long, has been with only one employer
Remember, your resume is not meant to be an autobiography. You don’t need to include everything you’ve ever done. Leave off experiences that don’t fit your current goal. For many people, one page is sufficient to present your skill set and qualifications, and adequately market you for the position you are seeking.
The Difference Between a College Graduate Resume and an Entry Level Resume
You might think that a new graduate resume and an entry-level resume are the same, but that isn’t necessarily so. If you are switching to an entirely new career, you may be targeting an entry-level job in your new field. Your approach to writing your resume would be vastly different from a new graduate’s approach, because you already have job experience that may help you in your job search.
The first major difference is the location of your educational information. If you are a new graduate, your education section will appear near the top of your resume – typically directly under your resume. For a career change resume, education will appear after the job history.
New grads should focus on college coursework, internships, co-ops, major school projects and research studies that are related to the job objective. This will not be the case for all entry-level resumes, especially for candidates without a college education or who are switching to a new field. In such a case, volunteer experience can be useful to illustrate important personal attributes – such as leadership.
Also, for a career change resume into a new field, a “transferable skills” section is useful to describe work functions that you do well in your current career that are also important in your new career. These might include interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, or team building.
